Sun Microsystems, Inc. was an American company that sold computers, computer components, software, and IT services. It was acquired by Oracle in 2010. Although the company is now defunct, yet its contributions to the computing world may never be forgotten. It was Sun which developed Java, an extremely popular programming language; the Network File System (NFS), the Solaris operating system. Moreover, Sun was a major contributor to open-source software and was a proponent of open systems such as Unix. Sun contributed significantly to the evolution of several key computing technologies, among them Unix, RISC processors, thin client computing, and virtualized computing.
